Master Planning and Design Guidelines

Incorporating historic preservation goals and strategies into a larger vision plan or policy document fosters appreciation of an area’s heritage and informs short- and long-term strategies for the preservation of historical and cultural resources. ARG has assisted municipalities, environmental planning consultants, urban design consultants, land development corporations, and community groups in the preparation or review of design guidelines, preservation plans, master plans, and specific plans, historic preservation ordinances, and related building and zoning codes. ARG provides historic preservation regulatory requirement analysis in the early phases of the land procurement or project planning process.

City of Anaheim, Citywide Historic Preservation Plan, Anaheim, CA
In 2009, after nearly 20 years of involvement in Anaheim planning, ARG led the effort to create a Citywide Preservation Plan that would allow for the evaluation of historic resources outside of established historic districts as well as those of the recent past. ARG wrote a citywide context statement, formulated criteria for designation of buildings and districts, and produced a Citywide Historic Preservation Plan that was adopted by the City Council in 2010.

Fort Ord, East Garrison Design Guidelines and Preservation Plan, Monterey County, CA
After completing a historic assessment of the East Garrison property, ARG prepared rehabilitation guidelines and the East Garrison Preservation Plan. The Preservation Plan summarized existing regulations and provided recommendations for how to protect the historic resources throughout the large-scale redevelopment of the site.

Los Angeles Union Station, Los Angeles, CA
As part of a wide array of architecture, conservation and planning preservation projects involving the landmark building, ARG developed design guidelines for LA Union Station that addressed size, scale, materials, lighting, signage, reversibility, and function considerations in both narrative and graphic formats.
