In 1980, Steve co-founded ARG as one of California’s first preservation-oriented architectural practices, and since then his design work has given new life to some of the nation’s most prominent sites and buildings. Equally committed to process and product, Steve enjoys bringing together diverse teams to tackle complex challenges. He will roll up his sleeves and sketch out ideas with clients collaboratively, and his clients regularly return with new projects. Steve’s creative pragmatism and good-sense leadership have been key to preservation successes including the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park, Cavallo Point-The Lodge at the Golden Gate, Batten School of Public Policy at University of Virginia, and multiple projects for The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens.

Steve has served as Vice Chairman of the US Committee of the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and on the steering committee of the Getty Institute’s Seismic Adobe Project. As a member of the Executive Committee of the California State Historical Building Safety Board, Steve played a major role in developing California’s Historical Building Code.
