Context Statement & Inventory
Oregon Parks & Recreation Department
Parks throughout Oregon
Originally a branch of the Oregon State Highway
Commission, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department was
created in 1989 with 223 parks and 39 million visits a year. ARG
was contracted to complete a two-phase project. The first phase
is to develop a Context Statement
that defines the major historical themes that have impacted the
development of the Oregon State Park system, including
an overview of the formation and operation of the agency from its
inception to the present. The purpose of the context
statements is to provide park staff with a framework for evaluating
historic resources within the park system. The second phase of the
project includes visiting individual parks and completing Oregon
inventory forms for historic resources within
these park settings.
