Old United States Mint
City of San Francisco
San Francisco, California
ARG prepared a Historic Structure Report for the
second United States Mint in San Francisco, a designated National
Historic Landmark. This 1874 Classically inspired building, designed
by Alfred B. Mullett, Assistant Supervising Architect of the Treasury
Department, is often cited as one of the
last major monuments of the Greek Revival. Of national significance
for its architecture and role in government and economics,
the Old Mint played a pivotal role in the financial history of
the United States during a 63-year period. A survivor of the 1906
earthquake, the Mint is also important on the local level as the
oldest monumental stone building in San Francisco.
The project included historical research and overview
of the building, identification of significant features and spaces,
assessment of building and materials conditions, and identification
of appropriate future uses and treatments for the building.
