First Church of Christ, Scientist
The Maybeck Foundation
Berkeley, California
Constructed in 1911 and officially
dedicated in 1916, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Berkeley
is known as Bernard Maybeck's masterpiece—considered the most significant
architectural
and cultural
resource on the west coast. ARG prepared
a conditions survey and Historic Structure Report for the conservation
and repair
of this treasured building. We collaborated with historian Sally
Woodbridge, author of the award-winning book Bernard Maybeck:
Visionary Architect, who prepared the statement of significance
for the report. Following the detailed conditions survey, the conservation
effort also focused on the building’s
significant artistic works, such as the fixtures, doors, gilded panels,
decorative stenciling, and painted concrete. Our report proposed
the approach and process for proper conservation treatments. In addition,
the report addressed code and universal access issues, including
a structural analysis, as well as fire protection and life-safety
requirements. The completed report will be used by the Maybeck
Foundation for both fundraising development and educational purposes.
