CIA Concept Plan

The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone
St. Helena, California

Founded in 1946, the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) is the only residential college in the world devoted entirely to culinary education. Since 1995, the Greystone campus has occupied the 1888 former Christian Brothers Winery-Greystone Cellars, “the largest stone winery in the world.” Other on-campus historic buildings include the former distillery, known as the Still House, the Gate House, and the historic Carpy residence.

In 1999, the CIA purchased the Carpy property, once part of the original winery. To develop a comprehensive approach for the combined Carpy and Greystone sites, ARG developed a master plan, the primary purpose of which was to reintegrate the adjacent Carpy property to preserve the historic buildings and their settings while meeting the CIA’s goals for providing additional dormitory housing. ARG also led a team of consultants to prepare a planning department submittal for the recombined sites.
