San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park, CA
Maritime Museum opened to the public in January
1939. The building featured a slate mural designed and carved by
sculptor Sergeant Johnson under the direction of the Works
Progress Administration of the New Deal. The mural is located
at the south-facing principal entrance of the building and has
been in a condition of disrepair and deterioration for many years.
The slate façade is a significant work of art
in addition to being an important architectural feature of this
prominent City landmark.
ARG assessed the condition of sculpture, developed conservation
treatments, and provided cost estimates for preservation of the
bas-relief sculpture. We
also prepared construction documents for this preservation
effort, which included an innovative method for
removing soluble salts from the panels using ultra-sonic cleaning
technology
and surface treatments for the masking of incised graffiti.
