First Brick House, Monterey State Historic Park
California State Parks
Monterey, California
Built in 1847, the two-story gable roof building
is the oldest surviving brick structure from California’s
early American period.
California State Parks stabilized and restored the building for
interpretation, including replacement of deteriorated original
brick.
ARG’s conditions assessment included review
of building documentation and field conditions, employing visual
examination and material
investigation. We performed materials research and testing to identify
agents leading to deterioration and potential treatments for masonry
conservation. We undertook additional materials research and testing
to determine the physical and mechanical properties of original
and replacement bricks and mortars to determine the factors affecting
the condition of the bricks and to better inform decisions on future
repair materials.
