Aleutian World War II National Historic Area
National Park Service
Unalaska/Dutch Harbor, Alaska
The Aleutian World War II National Historic Area
at Ulakta Head on Amaknak Island encompasses the historic footprint
of the U.S. Army base, Fort Schwatka. Located in the Alaskan
Aleutian Island Chain, the fort was one of four coastal defense
posts built to protect the harbors and waters of Unalaska during
World War II. Construction began in September 1942, and by 1943
most of the installations were operational. In 1996, Congress designated
this a National Historic Area.
ARG conducted a conditions assessment and materials
investigations of five of the remaining concrete structures to
evaluate the nature and extent of the material
deterioration evident in the structures and to determine the deterioration
causes. Several treatments were developed to stabilize the structures
and treat the conditions of material deterioration in the severe
environmental conditions. ARG also undertook an analysis of architectural
issues relating to accessibility, rehabilitation, and interpretation
of the site.
