Sunset Center
Sunset Center Foundation & City of Carmel-By-The-Sea
Carmel-By-The-Sea, California
Originally constructed in 1925 as a school, the
Sunset Center became a community and cultural center in 1964. The
Center includes a large Gothic auditorium, added in 1929. As part
of the consulting team for the EIR, ARG assessed a series of alternatives
intended to solve design issues in terms of theater and site improvements,
as well as the upgrade of patron facilities, acoustics, access,
seismic safety, ventilation, and site aesthetics. In 1997, ARG
conducted a building conditions assessment and an access and life-safety
survey. We subsequently produced a feasibility study presenting
alternate designs to adapt the existing auditorium into a state-of-the-art
theater used for various community venues. The Center is listed
on the National Register of Historic Places.
