Montgomery & Scott Halls
San Francisco Theological Seminary
San Anselmo, California
Constructed in 1891, Montgomery and Scott Halls
were the first structures built on the hilltop campus. After the
1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the buildings were vacated because
of the instability of their unreinforced-masonry construction.
ARG analyzed the building's structural and life-safety
needs and conducted a programming study. The buildings were strengthened
and repaired in a noninvasive manner, including waterproofing and
reroofing, in addition to interior space reprogramming and ADA
improvements. ARG also provided conservation services for the exterior
stone repair and cleaning, as well as the interior wood and plaster
damaged by water intrusion. The project won
a 2000 CPF Preservation Design Award.
