Old St. Mary's Cathedral
Old St. Mary's Parish
San Francisco, California
Built in 1854, Old St. Mary's Cathedral is one
of the oldest brick masonry buildings in San Francisco, surviving
the 1906 earthquake. The building is a State and City Landmark
and figures prominently in the city’s history.
ARG is providing
architectural, conservation, and planning services for rehabilitation
of the cathedral. This
multi-phase project has included preparation of exterior restoration
guidelines and the seismic strengthening of the unreinforced-masonry
structure. The first phase, consisting of the majority of the
cathedral’s
seismic upgrade, was recently completed. Future phases include
full completion of the seismic upgrade, ADA and life-safety upgrades,
and exterior
architectural rehabilitation and interior improvements.
