Napa Valley Opera House
Napa, California
Built in 1879,
the Napa Valley Opera House's upper floor auditorium is one
of only two surviving second-story theaters in California. ARG
served as architect for the building’s phased restoration
and new addition over a 15-year period. The project was divided
into three phases:
the first of which involved seismic strengthening, code upgrades,
and the façade restoration, which was completed in 1997. The second
phase
included the main lobby restoration and the addition of a new contemporary
cabaret theater and bar. The final phase, finished in July 2003,
concluded the project with the complete restoration and upgrade
of the upstairs main theater, including acoustical and stage improvements,
as well as a 4,000-square-foot expansion housing backstage
support spaces. ARG worked closely with the theater’s non-profit
organization to prepare fundraising and grant materials to assist
in the successful $14 million building campaign.
