Lava Beds National Monument
National Park Service
Tulelake, California
The site of the largest concentration of lava
tubes in North America, Lava Beds National Monument covers 72 square
miles within Siskiyou and Modoc counties in northeastern California.
There are approximately
435 known lava tube caves within the boundaries of the Monument,
24 of which were developed for public use. The park’s existing
visitor center complex was in poor condition and situated upon known
lava tube caves,
prohibited by federal
policy. NPS elected to replace the facility. The new facility design
consists of expansive views of the Tulelake Basin and sustainable
features, such as passive solar
heating, natural lighting, stained concrete flooring, and exposed
concrete masonry interior walls. The project includes a new parking
lot and roadway, realignment of an existing road intersection,
new pedestrian walkways and trails, and new site furnishings.
