Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute
Children's Hospital Oakland
Oakland, California
Constructed in 1922-23, Children’s
Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI) was once occupied by
University High School and Merritt College, and is now known as
Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza. Children’s
Hospital Oakland purchased the building from
the City of Oakland for relocation of their research laboratories.
ARG surveyed the building and assisted in the development of Standards
for Rehabilitation-compliant design, and guided the project
through the Landmark’s
board approval and tax certification processes. In addition, ARG
prepared design construction
documents for additional repairs. The expanded
laboratory and office space occupies 61,000 SF in the
mixed-use complex. The project received a 2000 California Governor’s
Historic Preservation Design Award.
