Calvary Presbyterian Church
San Francisco, California
Constructed in 1904 from building materials moved
from the church’s
prior property, an 1869 building that had been sold to the St.
Francis
Hotel, Calvary Presbyterian Church underwent a seismic upgrade
to the church’s
existing structural systems in response to the City's UMB ordinance.
As part of this process, the congregation redesigned
the interior spaces to better meet the programmatic needs of the
growing, active church community. Interior building enhancements
include the creation of a circulation spine providing clearer ADA-accessible
paths of travel throughout the complex. A skylighted lobby space
allows viewing of the historic stained-glass windows, as well as
the original exterior masonry wall of the sanctuary building. Completed
in 2002, ARG managed all phases of the project, including schematic
design through construction administration. This project received
a 2003 CPF Preservation Design Award in the Rehabilitation / Adaptive
Reuse category.
