Language Center
Stanford University
Stanford, California
Designed by Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge and completed
in 1891, the Language Center building is part of the original Inner
Quad. The building’s unreinforced-sandstone masonry exterior
sustained significant damage during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
As prime architect, ARG performed a building study and prepared
final plans and construction documents, as well as the development
of a use program. The Language Center houses the Director's Office,
classrooms, and a teaching materials development room, upgraded
to include state-of-the-art audio recording systems and new computer
facilities. The completed project received several awards, including
a 1998 CPF Historic Preservation Design Award.
