Cavallo Point, the Lodge at the Golden Gate

Cavallo Point, the Lodge at the Golden Gate - Historic Preservation - ARG

Located at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County, Fort Baker was a military base from 1850 until the mid-1990s. ARG was brought on board to sustainably restore and adapt a cluster of Fort Baker’s 18 richly historic buildings into a hotel. Christened as Cavallo Point, the hotel has been nationally celebrated for preserving its significant history and incorporating sustainability into the new designs.

DID YOU KNOW?

The name “Cavallo” is part of the San Francisco Bay Area’s history; a rocky point near Fort Baker was named “Punta de Caballo” in 1775 and early California settlers eventually began referring to it as “Cavallo.”

During construction, a shipping container was converted to a refrigerator to freeze the tin ceiling panels that occur throughout the site. When the tin was cold, the paint popped off due to thermal contraction. This allowed for paint removal from the historic panels without use of any chemicals.

Cavallo Point is certified LEED Gold and has received numerous awards recognizing the hotel for its sustainable, architectural, and hospitality achievements.
