Conservation

Our materials conservation work is integrated from the beginning of a project to address all of the important issues involved in the maintenance and repair of a historic structure. ARG was the first architectural firm on the West Coast to develop and utilize an in-house materials conservation laboratory for analysis of historic architectural materials.

We have the equipment, experience, and skills necessary to inspect, analyze, and prepare detailed construction documents for a wide range of historic materials and finishes. In the laboratory, we conduct chemical and microscopic analyses of existing materials, such as terra cotta, stone, mortars, woods, paints, and special finishes. This capability substantially benefits our clients and their historic structures by reducing costs and allowing for more thorough investigation.
